Morse tunes up with 38-0 win at MDI
BAR HARBOR — Pat Wolfe rushed for 146 yards on eight carries and added three touchdowns and a field goal as Morse High School closed out the regular football season Friday night with a 38-0 Pine Tree Conference win over Mt. Desert Island.
Wolfe accounted for 29 of his team’s points as the Shipbuilders improved to 6-2 and are scheduled to host No. 7 MDI in an Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal contest this weekend in Bath. Wolfe now has 1,112 yards.
Morse led 14-0 after one quarter as Wolfe scored on a 70-yard run and Michael Walton hooked up with J Cavanagh on an 8-yard pass, set up by a Wolfe 35-yard run.
Morse added two second-quarter touchdowns as Wolfe scored from 1-yard out and Walton connected with Everett Moye on a 5-yard TD pass. Wolfe added the conversion kick on all four first-half scores.
In the third quarter, Wolfe scored from 1-yard out and the senior back kicked a 35-yard field goal in the fourth period.
“I was very pleased in the way we performed, and it was one of our better played games this season,” said Morse coach Jason Libby. “We had no turnovers, no penalties, and right from the start we did well. We’ve been able to get some chemistry with our offensive and defensive lines, and that has allowed us to control the line of scrimmage the past two weeks.”
Luke Moreau added 39 yards on four carries and Walton was six of 11 for 59 yards.
Defensively, Zack Kidney and Cavanagh had seven tackles each, Cavanagh a forced fumble, and Jay Underwood and Nick Moore a sack each.
Lisbon 0, Winthrop 7
Cory Harris broke through the Lisbon defense for a 39-yard touchdown run with eight minutes left for the only touchdown as the host Ramblers downed the Greyhounds on Friday night in Campbell Conference action.
Harris rushed the ball 23 times for 152 yards, and the Winthrop defense held the injury-plagued Greyhounds (6-2), who were missing quarterback Luke Caron and running back Tobey Harrington, to 132 total yards.
“Winthrop has a good team that has been getting stronger as the season has gone on,” said Lisbon coach Dick Mynahan, whose team earned the No. 4 seed in Western C and will host No. 5 Winthrop (5-3) on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Scott Eck led the Lisbon rushing attack with 61 yards on 20 carries, while Josh Pomerleau chipped in 36 yards on the ground. Defensively, Mike McNamara made several tackles and blocked a Winthrop punt late in the fourth quarter to give the Greyhounds a chance.
Now, the teams will meet in the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Winthrop won last year’s Western C final 34-0.
Yarmouth 56, Freeport 6
In a game moved to Yarmouth Saturday night due to the heavy rain that made Freeport’s field unplayable, the host Yachtsmen rolled to a sixth straight win in a Campbell Conference matchup.
Yarmouth (6-2), which captured the first “Battle of the Bay” trophy with the victory, is the No. 7 seed in Western C and will visit No. 2 Livermore Falls (7-1) in the quarterfinals this week.
The Falcons finished 1-7 in their first season as a varsity sport.
“The team hung in there all season and never gave up,” said Freeport coach Rob Grover.
Down 13-0 in the second quarter, Falcons running back Miguel Beckles ran 64 yards for a touchdown to get Freeport to 13-6. Beckles finished with 115 yards on 18 carries. Kyle Moore gained 45 yards on eight rushes, while Matt McMillan picked up 163 return yards.
Holderness 24, Hyde 14
On a rain-soaked field in Bath, the host Phoenix dropped a decision on Saturday.
Holderness running back Sean Harrison (67 yards rushing) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to erase a 14-12 deficit for the win.
Down 6-0, Hyde took the lead on a Mike Ingalls 3-yard run, with Trevor Magloire running in the 2-point conversion for an 8-6 lead.
Holderness led 12-8 at the half, but a recovered fumble deep in Bulls territory led to a second Ingalls touchdown run and a 14-12 Phoenix lead.
The Phoenix are slated to visit Pingree School in South Hamilton, Mass., this upcoming Saturday.
