Clippers just too much
Yarmouth boys oust Lisbon, 9-0
By Bob Conn, Times Record Staff
YARMOUTH — For nearly 30 minutes, the Lisbon High School boys soccer team’s bend-and-don’t break mentality worked against the high-flying Yarmouth Clippers in Western B quarterfinal action on Wednesday at rainy Yarmouth High School.
With one hard, well-placed shot by Yarmouth striker Logan LaPointe with 11:54 left in the first half, the second-seeded Clippers found their stride and rolled from there to a 9-0 victory over No. 7 Lisbon.
The victory sends Yarmouth to the Western B semifinals against No. 3 Maranacook, while the Greyhounds finished 9-6 and lose seniors Marcus Bubar, George Clement, Tyler Dupal, Ethan Brewer, Phil Carville, Steve Obie, Cam Blouin and Ethan Audie to graduation.
“You look at Tyler who had 20 points, and Marcus with a lot of weight on his shoulders without the supporting cast that he had last year ... Ethan Audie, a field player who moved back to goalie, and Phil, Ethan Brewer, Steve Obie, Cam, George, who was injured most of the season, I am proud of each and every one of them,” said Lisbon coach Dan Sylvester. “The leadership was excellent this year, and they have helped the young players a lot.”
The beginning of the end
Bubar managed to shake free in one of Lisbon’s rare trips into Yarmouth (12-0-3) territory, and was tripped up resulting in a direct kick just outside the penalty area. The Clippers defended the kick well and quickly transitioned with LaPointe converting a pass from Luke Pierce for a 1-0 lead.
“That goal was pretty big and it broke the ice,” said LaPointe. “We go into every game like it is a final, and we always work hard and try to do the things that we do well. Even when it was scoreless, we knew that we would score at some point and capitalized on a nice play.”
The goal opened the floodgates as Pierce scored 1:48 later, and a three-goal spurt (Travis Merrill, Chris Knaub and Cotter Jackson) in a 3:19 stretch late in the first half gave Yarmouth a 5-0 lead at the half.
“Our kids hung in there for the first 30 minutes, then we started making some mistakes, but I can’t complain about the way we played and never gave up,” said Sylvester, whose team was outshot 27-1 in the first half with Audie making four saves.
Yarmouth’s first team began the second half, getting goals from Josh Britten and LaPointe in the first 11 minutes for a 7-0 edge, and reserves Colby Shields and Campbell Belisle-Haley completed the scoring for the Clippers.
An emotional Bubar, who led the Greyhounds with 21 goals this season (47 in the past two years), complimented Yarmouth for the quality of its play.
“They are a very good team, and obviously one of the top teams in the state, and we knew they were going to be aggressive and fast,” said Bubar, who talked a little about his high school soccer career. “It was a great time playing with all of my friends for four years of high school, and it was more than I could ask for.”
Yarmouth finished with a 48-4 shot advantage, putting constant pressure on a game Lisbon defense, led by Justin Grant, Mike Graham and Joe Osmond. Also, Mike Degou was solid in the midfield for the Greyhounds, along with Morgan Reeves, who played with a heavily taped ankle for the first time in a month.
Audie stood tall in the second half, making nine saves to finish with 13.
Yarmouth’s goal was shared by AJ Oliver (no saves) and Knaub (one save), and the Clippers finished with a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
