Will Geoghegan leads runners
Freeport boys second in Class C

CUMBERLAND — Will Geoghegan of Brunswick High School successfully defended his State Class A cross country crown as Saturday was filled with plenty of Mid-coast region highlights at the Twin Brook Recreation Center.
The senior Geoghegan toured the 5K course in 15:43 to beat out Nate Hathaway of Scarborough by four seconds. Morse’s Jason Kaake (16:14) came in third and Brunswick’s Liam Cassidy in fifth (16:18).
In Class C boys, Boothbay Region edged Freeport 58-59 with Lisbon taking sixth (146). For the Class C girls, Waynflete (37) nipped North Yarmouth Academy (38) and Freeport (53).
Class A
The Cheverus boys won with 83 points to beat out Scarborough (97), Massabesic (110), Gorham (138) and Brunswick (155), with Mt. Ararat in 10th with 237 points.
“This is a much tougher course than Belfast,” said Geoghegan. “I wanted to go out more conservatively. I had a good week of practice and we’re all in pretty good shape.”
Also running for Brunswick were George Mills (38, 17:55), Benson Worthington (54, 18:20), Stephen Purcell (78, 19:01), Patrick Horan (80, 19:04) and Jamie Ross (99, 20:10).
Mt. Ararat runners included Andy Reifman-Packett (26, 17:31), Jake Letourneau (29, 17:37), Colin Cundy (47, 18:05), Nick Demosthenes (73, 18:55), Alex Spies (89, 19:37), Conner Schneider (90, 19:38) and Dan Van Note (98, 19:56).
Morse’s Kory Scarponi took 42nd in 18:02.
The Cheverus girls, led by runner-up Emily Durgin, won with 52 points to beat out Massabesic (101). Mt. Ararat was ninth with 206 points and Brunswick 10th with 216.
Kathleen McMahon had a personal-best 19:34 to take fourth. “That blows away anything she’s ever done,” praised Brunswick coach Dan Dearing.
“I think she broke her PR by at least 25 seconds,” added Brunswick coach David DeLois.
Other Brunswick runners included Meghan McDonough (44, 22:02), Madsy Schneider (53, 22:24), Erica Noe (63, 22:55), Farren Welzel (71, 23:14), Jasmine Boyle (73, 23:18) and Lauren Dodge (23;26).
Kate Spies of Mt. Ararat took 11th in 20:06.
“I didn’t run the way I usually do,” said Spies. “I didn’t get a lot of sleep this week ... a lot of homework. It’s tough ... there were a lot of hills and I was hoping for a top 10.”
Other Mt. Ararat runners included Emilia McGrath (41, 22:00), Chloe Emerson (50, 22:21), Ariel McNett (58, 22:35), Lauren McNett (65, 23:00), Erin Fitzsimmons (88, 24:12) and Morgan Farrar (89, 24:15.)
Freeport boys 2nd
The Freeport boys, despite Griffen Day finishing third (17:22) and Henry Loughlin fifth (17:33), got edged by Boothbay 58-59. Merriconeag was fourth (109) and the Lisbon boys sixth with 146 points.
Also running for Freeport were Jake Kostik (8, 17:54), Taylor Saucier (27, 18:46), Max Jennings (33, 18:58), Bennett Wade (37, 19:05) and Miles Boucher (53, 19:48).
Alex Branson was Lisbon’s big runner as he took sixth in 17:39. Other Lisbon finishers included Malcolm LeGloahec (40, 19:08), Ben Kates (45. 19:28), Forrest Cornell (46, 19:28), Hayden Stewart (54, 19:49), Kyle Priddle (64, 20:11) and Cody Priddle (76, 20:40).
Jack Pierce was Merriconeag’s top runner in seventh (17:44), while teammate Juan Mesones was 11th (18:02).
In Class C girls, the Freeport girls took third with 53 points to finish behind Waynflete (37) and North Yarmouth Academy.
Running for Freeport were Ellie Soule (5, 21:47), Lindsey Merrill (7, 21:54), Kiera Berkemeyer (15, 22:25), Lauren Easler (33, 24:15), Lia Wellen (49, 25:14) and Brianna Roy (59, 27:48).
Lisbon’s Meagan Thomas had an outstanding meet as she took third overall in 21:35 to finish behind Martha Veroneau of Waynflete (21:04) and Amy Allen of Waynflete (21:20).
Wiscasset’s Heidi Pinkham was 26th in 23:51.
The New England championships are set for this upcoming Saturday in Wickham Park, Manchester, Conn.
